The pattern here is not printed on, it is taken out. A gel is laid down in the shape of the design and dissolves one of the two fibres in the weave, so the design comes out open and sheer while the cloth around it stays solid.
What separates the pattern from the ground is light rather than colour, so the whole thing reads differently depending on what you wear underneath it and how the light falls. Wear an undercap for full coverage.
White gives the burnout the softest reading of the twelve. On a pale ground the open and solid parts are close in tone, so the pattern shows as lace rather than as contrast.
